Weinbrenner, a company with a rich 130-year history, has been crafting industry-leading footwear since its inception in 1892. At the age of 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee, partnering with Joseph Peffer to serve the "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formally established.
The company's first catalog was printed in 1916, and it boasted more leather cutting machines than any other in the United States. The "Job-fitted" concept was introduced in 1917, and Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I. In 1938, the company took its first steps into safety footwear production, and in 1942, it celebrated 50 years in business, converting to all-military footwear for the duration of World War II, producing both combat and dress styles.
The year 1943 marked a significant milestone, as the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, a partnership that has endured to this day. In 1964, the company introduced the iconic "Hike n' Camp" boot, which became its best-selling product and is still available in its original design.
In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear. Weinbrenner celebrated its centennial in 1992 with the theme "A Century of Lasting Quality."
In 2000, Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). Following the September 11th attacks in 2001, the company donated 300 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero, with an additional 200 pairs following shortly after.
Weinbrenner continued to evolve, introducing the "1892 Heritage" line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots in 2014, and celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2017 with a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities, machines, equipment, manufacturing methods, and computer systems/programs.
In 2022, Weinbrenner celebrated its 130th year with the opening of a new factory in Merrill, Wisconsin, and the launch of its first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. As sales continue to increase and Thorogood gains popularity, the company is poised to expand its offerings with many new styles on the horizon.
