Weinbrenner, a company founded in 1892 by Albert H. Weinbrenner at the age of 27, has a rich history of providing quality footwear. In its early days, the company partnered with Joseph Peffer to serve the "Jobbing" trades out of a cobblery in Milwaukee.
In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was officially formed. The first catalog was printed in 1916, and the company boasted more leather cutting machines than any other in the United States. 1917 saw the introduction of the "Job-fitted" concept, and Weinbrenner became a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army during World War I.
The company took its first steps into safety footwear production in 1938 and celebrated its 50th anniversary in business in 1942. During World War II, Weinbrenner converted its entire production to military footwear, including combat and dress styles, which also became popular with civilians.
In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, but management and workers maintained an outstanding relationship that continues to this day. 1964 saw the introduction of the iconic Hike n' Camp boot, the Official Boy Scout Boot, which became the company's best-selling boot.
In 1988, the company was purchased by a local group that included six employees, and the "ThoroGard" division was created, featuring high-tech occupational safety footwear. Weinbrenner celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1992 with the theme "A Century of Lasting Quality."
The year 2000 marked a significant milestone as Weinbrenner employees took ownership of the company through an ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan). In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, Weinbrenner donated 500 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero.
In 2014, the company introduced the 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted, lifestyle boots, and in 2017, Weinbrenner celebrated its 125th anniversary with a renewed commitment to upgrading and improving its domestic facilities, machinery, and manufacturing processes.
The company's 130th anniversary in 2022 was marked by the opening of a new factory in Merrill, Wisconsin, and the launch of the first western wear product, Thorogood's Square Toe Wellingtons. As sales continue to increase, Thorogood is expanding its product offerings with many new styles on the horizon.
