The brand history is as follows:
In 1892, at age 27, Albert H. Weinbrenner opened a cobblery in Milwaukee with partner Joseph Peffer, serving the "Jobbing" trades. In 1900, the Albert H. Weinbrenner Co. was formed. The first catalog was printed in 1916, and the company had more leather cutting machines than any other in the U.S.
In 1917, the "Job-fitted" concept was introduced, and Weinbrenner was a major contributor of boots to the U.S. Army in World War I. The company took its first steps into safety footwear production in 1938. In 1942, the company celebrated 50 years in business, converting to all-military footwear for the duration of WWII, producing combat and dress styles, which also became popular with civilians.
In 1943, the company's workers organized under the International Boot & Shoe Workers Union, maintaining an outstanding relationship with management to this day. In 1964, the iconic Hike n' Camp boot, featuring a wedge sole and moccasin-style stitching, was introduced and became the company's best-selling boot.
The company was purchased by a local group, including six employees, in 1988, leading to the creation of the "ThoroGard" high-tech occupational safety footwear division. Weinbrenner celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1992 with the theme "A Century of Lasting Quality."
In 2000, the company's employees took ownership through an ESOP. After 9/11, Weinbrenner donated 500 pairs of durable work boots to Ground Zero. The 1892 Heritage line of handcrafted lifestyle boots was introduced in 2014, and the company celebrated its 125th anniversary in 2017, demonstrating a renewed commitment to upgrading its facilities and operations.
In 2022, Weinbrenner opened a new factory in Merrill, WI and launched its first western wear product, the Thorogood Square Toe Wellingtons. Sales continue to increase as the Thorogood brand gains popularity, with many new styles on the horizon.
